| The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) is adjacent to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) on the grounds of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. To locate AFRRI via map services, search for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, 8901 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland 20889-5600. General access to WRNMMC is restricted. | Via Metro Rail |
| Take the Metro Rail Red Line train to the Medical Center station (Metro system map). Take the escalator to the surface and walk toward the bus area. WRNMMC campus shuttles (Blue Line or Gold Line) depart every 15 minutes from the station from 6:10 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. and will stop directly in front of AFRRI. Upon boarding the shuttle, have photo identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport, military ID, or other government-issued ID) ready to present to security at the gate. The shuttle service does not operate between 8:55 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Service resumes at 2:45 p.m. and runs until 5:30 p.m. If walking from the Medical Center Station, cross Rockville Pike at the traffic light onto South Wood Road and enter the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center installation. Present identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport, military ID, or other government-issued ID) at the guard booth. Twenty yards after the guard booth, turn right onto Palmer Road South and continue past the hospital on your left, past a stop sign, and across the bridge. AFRRI will be on your left at the end of the bridge. |
| From Washington, DC |
| Drive north on Wisconsin Avenue (Route 355), which becomes Rockville Pike at Jones Bridge Road. After crossing Jones Bridge Road, proceed to the far right lane and turn right at the traffic light into the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center entrance (South Wood Road). Present identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport, military ID, or other government-issued ID) at the guard booth and proceed ahead. Twenty yards after the guard booth, turn right onto Palmer Road South and continue past the hospital on your left, past a stop sign, and across the bridge. AFRRI will be on your left at the end of the bridge. |
| From Maryland |
| Drive south on I-95 to I-495 East (Capital Beltway) toward College Park/Silver Spring. Go west toward Bethesda, taking exit 34 (Route 355, or Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike). As you exit, bear right and follow signs for Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike South toward Washington/Bethesda. Continue south, staying in the left lane, and turn left at the traffic light into the WRNMMC via its main gate, which becomes South Wood Road. Present identification (e.g. driver’s license, passport, military ID, or other government-issued ID) at the guard booth. Twenty yards after the guard booth, turn right onto Palmer Road South and continue past the hospital on your left, past a stop sign, and across the bridge. AFRRI will be on your left at the end of the bridge. |

| Drive north on I-495 (Capital Beltway) and take exit 34, Wisconsin Avenue (Route 355 south). Continue on Wisconsin Avenue, staying in the left lane, and turn left at the traffic light into the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (South Wood Road). Present identification (e.g. driver’s license, passport, military ID, or other government-issued ID) at the guard booth. Twenty yards after the guard booth, turn right onto Palmer Road South and continue past the hospital on your left, past a stop sign, and across the bridge. AFRRI will be on your left at the end of the bridge. Observe speed limits to avoid traffic tickets. Note: Cars without DoD decals may be subject to random searches. |
